What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test to measure English language proficiency. It is a globally recognized test that determines the English communication skills of international students.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is owned and conducted by IDP Education, the British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

If you want to study or work in Canada, or if you want to migrate here and become a permanent resident, you must be able to prove your proficiency in the English language. You will need your IELTS Canada scores to prove that you have the English language skills necessary for study, work or migration to Canada.

Students who wish to study or work abroad in Canada needs to take IELTS test. IELTS results are graded from 1 to 9, where 1 is the lowest score and 9 is the highest score. There is no pass or fail system for IELTS.

Generally, this tests have four sections; Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The final score is calculated by evaluating all the four section of the IELTS.

The overall IELTS score for Canada is 6.0 or above which may vary from university to university. So, it is your IELTS band score which will determine your university admission to Canada.

Minimum IELTS Requirements in Canada

There isn’t a single universal “pass or fail” IELTS score for Canada. Instead, the required band scores depend on two things: the university you apply to and the visa requirements set by IRCC.

While many Canadian universities set their own entry criteria, immigration officers still expect students to meet a minimum English language benchmark for their Canada student visa.

Undergraduate

  • Bachelor’s, Diplomas, Short-term Programs
  • Overall IELTS: Minimum 6.0
  • Each Band: No less than 5.5
  • Example: Many community colleges and universities accept this score for entry into bachelor’s or diploma programs

Postgraduate

  • Master’s, PG Diploma, Graduate Certificates
  • Overall IELTS: Minimum 6.5
  • Each Band: No less than 6.0 (some institutions allow 5.5 in one skill, but not common)
  • Example: Universities like Toronto, McGill, and Waterloo often ask for 6.5 overall and 6.0 per band.

Competitive Programs

  • Overall IELTS: 7.0+
  • Each Band: 6.5 or above
  • Example: Business schools, law, and medicine programs often set higher thresholds due to intensive communication needs.

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

  • Overall IELTS: Minimum 6.0
  • Each Band: 6.0
  • Update: As of November 2024, SDS has been merged into the regular study permit process, but the 6.0 benchmark still applies in practice.

At Goreto, we always remind our students that IELTS is just one part of the journey. While securing a 6.5 or higher gives you wider choices, even with a lower score there are still programs and colleges in Canada that may suit you. The important thing is not to feel discouraged—come talk to us, and we’ll guide you toward the best pathway based on your score and goals.

Not every student achieves 6.5 on their first attempt. The good news is that several Canadian colleges are more flexible, accepting students with an overall IELTS score of 5.5–6.0.

These options can be a stepping stone for Nepali students who want to start their studies in Canada and later upgrade qualifications.

IELTS Validity, Retakes & Eligibility

While preparing for Canada, many students at Goreto ask us about the validity of IELTS scores, retake rules, and age limits. These details often cause unnecessary stress, but the reality is simpler than most think. Here’s a clear breakdown of what you should know before planning your next steps.

IELTS Validity

Your IELTS result is valid for two years from the test date. This applies to both university admission and your Canada student visa application. If your score is older than two years, you’ll need to sit for the test again.

Retakes

There is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS. Many Nepali students retake the exam once or twice to push their score from 5.5 or 6.0 up to 6.5+, which opens doors to more universities and smoother visa approvals.

Eligibility & Age

Unlike some tests, IELTS has no upper age limit. The key requirement is that you are applying to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada and can prove your language ability.

What to Do if You Don’t Meet the IELTS Requirement

Not every Nepali student achieves their target IELTS score on the first attempt. At Goreto, we meet many students who worry about a 5.5 or 6.0 band. The truth is that there are still clear pathways to Canada, and with the right guidance you can continue your journey with confidence.

  • Apply to flexible colleges:  Some Canadian colleges are more flexible and accept students with an overall IELTS of 5.5 to 6.0. These programs can be a great way to begin your studies in Canada while gaining access to work opportunities and building your academic profile.
  • Consider pathway or English support programs:  Universities often provide English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or pathway courses. These allow you to strengthen your English skills while studying, and once you reach the required level you can transition into your main program.
  • Retake IELTS with proper preparation: If your goal is to enter a top-ranked university or a postgraduate program, retaking the test may be the right step. With focused preparation, practice tests and professional coaching, even a small improvement of half a band can open many more doors.
  • Look at alternative tests when suitable: Some institutions may accept TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo English Test. IELTS, however, remains the safest choice for both admission and visa purposes. If you are thinking about another test, always consult with us first to make sure it aligns with your visa application.

Our Advice

Your IELTS score does not define your future. Whether you have 5.5, 6.0 or 7.0, there is usually a program in Canada that matches your profile. The most important step is to sit with an advisor who can match your score to the right program and guide you through the visa process.

How to Improve Your IELTS Score for Canada?

Understand the Test Structure

Before anything else, get familiar with how IELTS is organised: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section has its own rules and timing. Knowing exactly what to expect on test day reduces anxiety and helps you focus on answering confidently rather than figuring out the format on the spot.

Practice with Mock Tests

Mock tests are your rehearsal for the real exam. They build stamina, sharpen timing, and show you which skills need more work. Always practice under exam conditions, using official IELTS sample papers or reliable mock exams. After each test, review mistakes and understand why you lost marks.

Practice Real Conversations

Speaking practice is about more than grammar—it’s about fluency, confidence, and clarity. Find opportunities to talk in English daily, whether with classmates, tutors, or even through online speaking clubs. Record yourself, listen back, and notice where you hesitate. Small changes here can lift your speaking band score significantly.

Listen Diverse English Sources

Don’t limit yourself to IELTS practice tracks. Listen to news, podcasts, interviews, or lectures in different accents (British, Canadian, American, Australian). Exposure to real-world English improves your ability to catch meaning quickly and handle the listening section with ease.

Build Writing Skills

Writing is often the hardest part for Nepali students. Practice essays and reports regularly, but don’t just write—get feedback. An IELTS trainer or mentor can show you if you’re off-topic, repeating vocabulary, or making grammar errors that lower your score.

Expand Vocabulary Naturally

IELTS examiners look for range. Read widely—articles, blogs, academic pieces—and note useful words and phrases. Try using new vocabulary in your speaking and writing practice so it feels natural, not forced.

Manage Time Effectively

Many students know the answers but lose marks because they run out of time. Train yourself with strict timing: 60 minutes for reading, 40 minutes for listening, and so on. Good time management is as important as language skill in achieving a high IELTS band.

Counsellor’s Advice

Don’t panic if your first IELTS attempt doesn’t give you the score you hoped for. With proper coaching and preparation, improving by even half a band can make all the difference for your study in Canada from Nepal.

Common IELTS Queries for Canada Student Visa

Yes. Canadian universities and immigration authorities expect IELTS Academic. IELTS General, used for work or PR, is not accepted for student visas.

Most institutions require at least 6.0 overall with no band under 5.5 for undergraduate study. For postgraduate programs, 6.5 with no band under 6.0 is typical. SDS applicants need 6.0 in all bands.

A few colleges accept 5.5 for certain diplomas, but visa approval is not guaranteed. We recommend at least 6.0 overall to reduce risk.

For a spouse applying as a dependent, IELTS is not usually mandatory. It becomes important if the spouse plans to work or study.
